Mike Conway: Road to recovery
Mike Conway filmed an exclusive video diary for AUTOSPORT documenting his battle to return to fitness following his back and leg-breaking crash in the 2010 Indianapolis 500

  By Mike Conway

On the final lap of last year's Indianapolis 500, Mike Conway tangled with Ryan Hunter-Reay and his car was launched into the catch fencing at over 200mph. He sustained several broken vertebrae and compound fractures to his left leg.

Fast forward to February 2011 and it was announced that Conway will make his comeback this year with Andretti Autosport.

The time between injury and recovery is often a long, hard slog for a driver as he battles to return to fitness. It's also a challenge that few usually get to witness.

But just a few weeks after his accident, we armed Conway with a video camera so he could film a diary of his progress over the months - including treatment in a chryogenic chamber with temperatures as low as -140C.

Now he is preparing to return to action, you can watch the story of his recovery.

*You can also read an interview with Conway in this week's AUTOSPORT magazine, available in shops from Thursday, or in digital form here.
