Can a one-time winner really be a worthy champion?

Titles should be won by the driver who claims more victories than anyone else, so convention goes. Does the unpredictable nature of the British Touring Car Championship render that notion obsolete?

It normally seems right that the driver who takes the most wins in a season should be champion. That usually happens in Formula 1, and when it doesn't there are often claims that someone has been robbed.

There is a simple logic to that. The point of a race is to find a winner, so the point of a championship (quite literally a series of races) should surely be to find the car-driver combination that wins the most often...

Kevin Turner is Autosport’s Chief Editor. While studying History at the University of York, Kevin began covering UK club events as a freelance reporter for Autosport and Motorsport News. He joined the Autosport staff as Editorial Assistant on the magazine in 2006, winning what is now known as the Motorsport UK Young Journalist of the Year Award. Kevin also led work on the special publication celebrating 70 years of Autosport and has been a judge on the Aston Martin Autosport BRDC Young Driver Award, formerly known as the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award, since 2008. He lives in Warboys with his wife and two children.
